The Gilbert family had already been through hell by the time Sarra Gilbert murdered her mother. In May 2010, Shannan Gilbert, a young woman with hopes of a better life, disappeared while working on Long Island. Her disappearance led to a horrifying discovery: the bodies of 10 victims, many of them sex workers, scattered along the shore.
Investigators believed they could be linked to the mysterious Long Island Serial Killer.
Shannan’s body wasn’t found until December 2011, in a marshy area near where she disappeared. The loss of Shannan hit her family hard, especially her sister, Sarra. After Shannan’s death, Sarra was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and her mental health began to spiral.
She began to hear voices…
