On January 8, 2011, in a Tucson, Arizona grocery store parking lot, Representative Gabby Giffords was shot in the head by someone in the audience of her “Congress on Your Corner” event.
The perpetrator, 22-year-old Tucson resident Jared Lee Loughner, harbored deep government mistrust and an intense hatred for Giffords and what she stood for. Loughner continued firing into the crowd, leaving six dead, including a federal judge and a nine-year-old girl, and injuring a total of 19 individuals.
The shooter was arrested and invoked his Fifth Amendment right, refusing to discuss his motive for the attack. Investigators discovered that Loughner had planned the assassination on Giffords in the weeks leading up to the event, leaving behind strange and cryptic messages along the way.
